I'm planning to go backpacking through Asia. Help please? ?

This will be my first time, and a friend of mine is doing the same thing, except through Europe. He said I just basically need to find the hostels and see stuff, but I don't know where anything is. I want to go through Russia to get to Germany, because we're meeting up there, then through South Korea, to Japan, then to India and go back home. I'm not exactly sure how to do this, so ANY help is greatly appreciated. ^_^
Also, any maps where the hostels are, or interesting things to see, would be helpful!
