I'm on contract with Vodafone...?

I'm on contract with Vodafone,
I know you can upgrade 2 months early of your existing contract. Will I have to give my previous contract phone back when I upgrade?
Also, if I terminate my contract with Vodafone will I have to give my contract phone back?
Sorry, I'm not all good with this stuff.
