I'm not trying to be cute or subversive by asking this - why do we write poetry?

I ask not only why we write it, but what it is - a pure art? A form that enables the writer to render emotions, feelings, and ideas through heightened diction? Is that all it is? And how does one assess the quality of a piece of poetry?
 
It's the same reason we write books, paint art, and dream. They're a way of expressing our feelings and whatnot.

It may seem pointless, but it's just what some people do. Just like you might do certain hobbies that appeal to you. It's like that.

And the "quality" of a piece of poetry is unique to the reader. That's the beauty of it - everyone can interpret a poem but we usually interpret them differently. It's good to see different ways of thinking.
 
Poetry is feelings and emotions expressed in finest choice of words. It is an upper state of expression governed by a set of linguistic guidelines that rhyme and have to move the emotions when recited.
By the way Arabic poetry is the finest.
 
It's an art form, like all others (dance, painting, singing, tattoo, theatre etc. whatever takes your fancy) it can be a way for you to express yourrself, a way to escape or a way for the writer to send his/her message to other people.

As for what makes a qulity peice of poetry, it varies for all people, but the most powerful are the ones which can envoke an emotion, make you see things in a different way for bring any scene to life, one of my favourite peices is about a woman in an apothecary saying how she likes to watch the coloured vials of poisen glisten, I love it because it's such amazing imagrey.

A quote from Oscar Wilde says that 'All art is worthless", I think he is right- all art is worthless, but all the best things in life are. Love is useless but what he is trying to say that all the useless things in life be it art or love are all the things that make life worth living, they're the extras that make life worth living.

Anyway, I'm going to start rambling on now and getting philisophical so I'll leave it a that. Hope my opinion helps.
