I'm not sure whats wrong with the Auto-transmission on my Honda civic 2001?

I'm at a stop sign with my gear shifter in drive( its an automatic Transmission) and I press down on the accelerator to preceed, and the car does not move at all. So I pushed the car to the side of the road and waited a couple minutes and put it in Drive again and it starts to move but 1 minute later it gives out again?? Whats Wrong????!!
