I'm not eligible for a sign up bonus for enlisting in the Army 3 years, what...

...would be some reasons? I would think signing my rights away for 3 years would come with some (instant) benefits, while I'm not complaining but rather concern as why I would not be eligible for a sign up bonus... Originally I spoke to my Army recruiter and he gave me the notion that signing up for the Military will guarantee me 20,000 - 40,000 bonus (While this is definitely a PLUS) it wasn't my main reason of joining, but right after I reserved my Job, he then turned it around on me and said "Unfortunetly you don't qualify for a bonus..." . My job will be Infantry, and if I like it I plan to go for 6years+. If anyone knows a little more on the topic I would much appreciate any info, I ultimately would like to see if I can get some kind of bonus.
In response to Sofa King -I'm actually quite optmistic about joining the Army, in all honesty I can't wait, Hence the ( ) around the "instant benefits" I'm only wondering why they would say something, and not follow through... but then again they are just sales people...

My asvap was kinda whack, I scored 53, I did gradute High School with some college, and I am 23, so is this why?
Awesome, thanks for all the quick response everyone! (And hopefully I didn't come off cynical, like I said I was truely looking for reasons) Any ways, This definitely did help me clarify most of what I was wondering. I'll make sure to double check with my recruiter before everything is finalized and I ship off to Basic, Thanks and Good Night all.

Since I have been retired from the Army and Recruiting for almost 10 years now, I cant give you a hard answer. While I was still in, your High School Diploma and 53 AFQT would have qualified for a bonus, but with Recruiting the way it is today, the only advice I can give you, is to ask your Recruiter what the current qualifications for a bonus are!

To the guy who said 'tell your Recruiter you won't ship unless you get your bonus' I say. The Recruiter has no power to give, or withhold bonuses, that happens at MEPS.

Also, if you try to renegotiate your contract in order to get a bonus, they have to use the rules that were in effect on the day you joined the DEP.

Sorry if all that sounds dreary, but I always believed in being totally honest with my applicants and I try my hardest to be totally honest out here.

Once again, ask your Recruiter, the rest of us do NOT have all the facts.

You may not have scored well on the ASVAB. Do you have a high school diploma? A lot of things could be factored in. You might have gotten one if you enlisted for a longer term, etc.

did they not give you any reasons why you wouldnt qualify for a bonus? because if they didnt then that is a little fishy to me. while i hate to say it and let it be known that i have the utmost respect for all us servicemen and women, are you sure that the 20,000 -40,000 bonus isnt just to get ppl to sign up?
