Hi =)
I'm an 18 year old girl who was born in India, but did all my schooling in USA. Since August, I've been enrolled in an Indian University, and I'm like the only person from USA here...there's another foreigner from Singapore, and one from New Zealand..and the rest are local Indians.

In order to adjust to India and not look like a show off, I kind of dropped the American accent for the past 3 weeks, just to seem a little respectful. If someone talks to me in Hindi, I'd respond in Hindi, just as I would with my parents.
I realize however, that I'm just making a fool of myself by changing my accent when I speak English. I did it to avoid people calling me names like "white whore" or "gori wannabe" (gori = white) or "spoiled brat" etc. In India, people tend to criticize others for speaking foreign slangs or adapting western culture (google up priyanka chopra accent if you want further clarification...she's an indian actress who lived in USA like me, and was criticized).

I want to start speaking the American accent as soon as possible, because I acknowledge that I am different to those who grew up in India, and I have to be proud of who I am. The problem is, they're used to me talking in this refined Indian accent..
If someone asked me why I'm "showing off with an American accent", or criticizes me, what should I say?
