I have a 125cc 4-stroke twin- the pistons go up n down together.
So i was thinking to use a pickup coil and cdi unit off another 6volt motorcycle - as converting to a 12volt system requires alot more work.

At a guess i would imagine i could use either a cdi unit off a 6volt single or twin.

Please note- im not interested in spending hundreds on a boyer/ neutronic system, as they look cheapy made yet overpriced. Im looking for a diy solution to rid of the points- as new replacment point are poor quality

when u change the points are you changing the condensers aswell??...
i recall years ago you could buy kits that Incorporated the points BUT also utilised a CDI unit....ill have a sniff round and update if i find something.

You're probably going to need at least one engine casing and probably a new flywheel (well, I say new, second hand off eBay or scrappers). This is for the pickup sensor to mount to the casing and the extra nobble on the flywheel that it senses as it passes each time the crank turns a rotation. This is of course on top of some wiring loom modifications, which may be more complicated and possibly be easiest to try to locate a complete wiring loom from a compatible model.

If you can find a later model of the same bike the bits may well be interchangeable with the model you have.

Its not the easiest job in the world, and may in fact be very difficult depending on the exact model you're trying to convert, but it'll certainly keep you busy.

Personally I'd get a new set of points and a file and dress the surfaces myself before fitting, and the cheapo pattern parts tend to be a little shoddily finished.

I wish I could go back to points and carburettors for everything, I can't do a damn thing with electronics and fuel injection, but I could spend hours playing with plugs, points and carbs :-) (I guess that's why people don't use them any more, they don't want to spend hours messing around...)

A CDi unit is not the end of the matter. Look at what the Boyer set ups have and then you will see the extent of the work required.
One from another bike will not fit perhaps or not give the right output and advance and retard set ups.

EDIT - have a look at the link below. Although it talks about not neding advance and retard on small 4 strokes I would bet yours is a honda CB125T and is quite high revving and so would need it.
