im looking to buy a 91 ford explorer, and im looking at one today, what can i do

to check that it runs good? i just want to learn some tests to do so that way i know that the motor isnt bad and that im getting a good deal, they want 1000 for it but im gonna try and barter for 800. the vehicle supposively has 58,000 miles on it because it belonged to the womans mother and has been dormat for a while. what can i do to make sure it runs good? i might just buy it anyways because its so cheap and i could just fix whats wrong with it, however i still wanna learn how to test it. thanks! and god bless
 
Here are some things to check: check the oil level, and look under the oil cap for any white milky residue (which would indicate internal coolant leakage aka the motor is going to go out soon), pull the transmission dipstick and smell the fluid to check for a burnt smell, which would indicate a burnt up transmission. Check the tire tread, lights, horn. Start it, listen to it run hear for any weird noises. Put it through all the gears and make sure that works ok. When driving it make sure it doesn't seem like its missing a lot of power or anything.. also check the brakes for decent stopping power and any weird noises. Good luck!
