I'd like to put together a list of announcements for high school students containing facts/tips etc. with relation to the environment, how we're treating it and ways to be more environmentally friendly.

Some examples would be:
- the amount of energy wasted on cell phone chargers left plugged in when not in use could power _______,
- by bringing your own reusable mug to Starbucks, you save $0.40 per drink.
- the avg north american produces ____ of waste/year

I would appreciate any kind of fact/tip you can provide that relates to the idea of being environmentally friendly. If the fact/tip can be kept 1-3 sentences, that would be ideal. Thanks!

i'll give it a shot.

-wash clothing in cold water only. 80% of energy used in laundry is used to heat the water.
-if you cut out one soda a day,you save $2.80 and 1190 calories/week.
-put a brick in the toilet tank and save 1/2 gallon/flush.

Plant a tree. One tree will consume 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide in it's lifetime.

Use cold water to wash clothes. This uses less electricity to heat the water.

Bring your own bag to grocery stores for small amounts of food purchases. Plastic bags are made of petroleum which then increases green house gas emissions.

Make sure your tires are inflated properly. This can save you on average about 5 mpg on your fuel economy if your tires are inflated properly.

Replace a light bulb in your home with an energy efficient one. This can save about 200 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.

The US has about 5% of the world's total population, but uses about 30% of the world's total oil production.

The websites below had some interesting tips.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American produces about 4.4 pounds (2 kg) of garbage a day, or a total of 29 pounds (13 kg) per week and 1,600 pounds (726 kg) a year.
