I think that would be a great starter bike, but the price is too high. The bike is almost fifteen years old, for cryin out loud! I'd try to get them as close to 2,000 as I could. However, you haven't said anything at all about the condition of the bike, and that's a HUGE consideration! If it's in great condition then it's much closer to a fair price. If it's been stored outside, has scuff marks on the bar ends, tank and pegs from being laid down, or has mechanical problems, etc... well that stuff drops the value of a bike FAST. Do yourself a huge favor and take someone with you who is familiar with motorcycles when you go shopping. I can't stress that too much! If you don't know anyone, head down to one of the local dealerships and explain your situation... adding that of course this is where you'll be coming to buy parts, gear, etc. Heck, a lot of dealerships have used bikes for sale too.
I think that size-wise, however, this is a great choice. I had a Shadow 600 several years ago and it was a very fun ride. My particular bike was all chromed out (a fact I am ashamed to admit today!

) so it was underpowered for its weight, but it was otherwise a pleasure to ride. I got bit by the sportsbike bug and replaced it with a Ducati 900SS. But I'd been riding for almost 20 years at that time. I think that a 600 for a first time rider should make a really good fit.
And kudos to you for buying used as a first bike- it hurts a lot less when you drop it, when it's not your dream bike, hot off the showroom floor!
