It's about a thief that became a monk. He had three vows. He still stole stuff, but it was kind of helping people so it wasn't so bad. Any ideas?
 
Are you sure he became a monk? I found a book that kind of follows some of the same lines such as he was a thief that had three "ambitions" or vows. He stopped stealing, but still took money from the people.
The name of the book I found is "The Sly Thief of Valenciennes". Let me know if this is it...or close even.
