I'm into photography, but I'm a beginner. What should I start with?

I've been looking at photography for a while now but I never knew much about it. My friend is really into it and I was concerned about crossing the line into her turf. But I would really like to learn more about it. Plus it's summer and I really need something to do.

Asking my friend about it is out of the question because I don't feel like dealing with that drama. Where should I look at to find out more information about photography? Are there any classes I can take? My uncle is a photographer and I was going to ask him about some of it but more options would be nice. I live in Arlington, Texas. Any help?

Do you have a camera? even a old rubbish cellphone camera would do for now.
Try taking pictures of everything and multiple pictures at that learn by doing, experiment with different setting and techniques.
Theres no point in wasting a lot of money on expensive equipment when you have the means to start at the moment.
It might not be ideal but i've seen a good photographer get better pictures with a cell phone than someone with a slr who really didn't understand how to take a photo.
So learn how to compose your photo.

Try joining forums and ask questions there and join in the 'scene'
Also look at well taken photos from professionals and amatuers alike

(Film SLR's are good and whilst they can be useful the fact you can't get almost instant feedback like a digital and further more can't share it easily on the computer makes it not as good as a digital camera. Being able to closely examine it on the computer is nice and you can post it for your buddies on the photography forum to advise you. Practise practise practise just keep taking photos of everything and anything, look for something interesting in the everyday life we all take for granted)
