I have a Canon Powershot (amature, i know) and i really would like to somehow start photography. Could you give me tips on how to use this camera to do more professional- looking shots? Thank you!

To start learning photography, you will have to get a camera that is fully adjustable, so you can control the cameras exposure and use interchangeable lenses.

The camera you have is what is called a P&S camera and does all the exposure calculations for you and you have NO control over the shutter speed or aperture (used for freezing action, implied motion and selective focus). What you can learn is how to use them to compose interesting images.

Here is a link that will get you started learning how to compose

You picked a great starter camera. That was my starter camera from about 5 years ago, and it still takes fabulous pictures. The best advice I can give you is to be very purposeful with your pictures. What is it about the subject matter that truly interests you? How can you change your angle on a subject to make the picture appear more creative and therefore more professional? The PowerShot has a great "digital macro" setting on it where you can get amazing close up shots (I mean like within an inch of the subject!) of flowers or other objects. I think that auto setting on your camera will probably be fine for your purposes; it's hard to do manual settings on a point-and-shoot. I would encourage you to one day get an SLR and learn the manual functions on it. Then you can get stunning photos because you have complete control over every aspect of the picture. Also think about the edges of your frame and positioning your subject within the frame to make it appealing. A common rule is the "rule of 3rds", meaning that subjects are often most interesting presented at the intersection of thirds if you mentally divided the picture into 3 sections horizontally and 3 sections vertically. Take notice of the quality of light in the pictures, often you have to turn the flash off to get a better picture.

Hope this helps as a starter! I would recommend the book "Photography" by Barbara London and John Upton. It's a textbook, but you can find really cheap ($7) copies on Amazon, or check it out from a library. This book is especially useful to learn manual functions of a camera, and it's really easy to read and retain the information.

Have fun! Photography is a very rewarding hobby!
