I'm in over my head

I need some very specific help. Hopefully in steps to achieve the end. Here is my laundry list of problems. I have searched the directions for limewire and read the forums. I must not know what I am reading, because I can't find answers.
1. I am using a Toshiba P25-S609, P4, 3.0 Gig, Win XP, This laptop is designed as an Entertainment Center. Lots of HD room.
2. Ursula recommended D/L a bunch of file converters from a link she has. I did that and can not access the converters.
3. I have a DSL connection, I configured limewire as recommended by LeeWare in his thread "maximing upload download success limewire." Why are my downloads going at a snails pace, 0-25 kbs?
4. What is the deal with .avi? how do I get my Media Player 9 to play this and other extensions it doesn't recognize?
5. Who are all the idiots out there who say a download is one thing, then when you play it, watch out! It is not what you expect.
6. I am interested in Pro, but I have to get this working first.
7. I did D/L some movies, such a Pirates of the Carribbean, but the quality is poor. The picture was very small and when I maximixed it, it became very poor and dark with color boxes on the right side. When you download movies, are they all small pictures like that, I mean 3x4 inches.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Codecs...

Yupp, that's the word...

THE most simple way to solve 99.99% of "It won't play right..." problems is to Download and install

Nimo Codecs

Just click on the same which you will find in my 'sig' below...

Do not install the 'beta' version unless you really know what you are doing...
The 'basic' release version is fine...
There is very little to do in regards the install...
It is very easy.

Hope you do try this and come back with a 'report' ...

p.s. IF you do re-install or 'upgrade' Windows Media Player... (And some other players packages, also), than you will need to re-install Nimo...

Thanks for the info on NIMO and CODECS. I clicked on your link and the server is overloaded with a message saying come back THx. Which one of the downloads do I need, or does it matter?
Thanks againfor the help.

You want "Build 8"
If one of the mirror sites is busy or with problems, just try another or wait one hour.

I have installed both the Basic and the Beta on XP machines...
Many times... Zero problems...

OK. Thanks I'll try that in the morning. Do you know what a "default magnet link handler" is? Limewire is asking me if I want LM to be that. I have done search and help. Can't find an asnwer. I am running P4, 3.0 Gig, Win XP, Laptop configures specifically for entertainment. Thanks. I really am trying to figure this stuff without asking. I still can not figure out the avi2mpeg stuff. I can't find the executables. Will avi play on Realplay, and if so, is there a reason you cannot do that? Thanks again for your patience.

Thanks for all the help. Everyone who replied, thank you. I am running up the white flag and surrendering. I just don't understand this stuff. Choosing a magnet handler that will automatically Dl a magnet, OK, I bite, what's a magnet. Thanks anyway, I'm glad there are some folks out there that understand this stuff.

Adios

Oh yes! So many terms to learn, since the development of p2p is mostly in the vocabulary of the developers. Still, you've come a long way seeing how long your question list was.

Best wishes with whatever you try next--or just forget about the troubles and use whatever you can.

btw, magnets sound complex, but all they really are is link to a file. Unlike a link to a Web Page, magnets link to a file shared by, say, LimeWire.

See this link http://www.magnetdb.com/

(I list a little test magnet there--I'd like to get to the point where I can just email magnet links to my friends)
