Joe, I had a revision on a sacroiliac joint fusion....I had the original surgery about 16 months ago...it was a failure....but in the last 3 months a new surgery had come about....and my Dr. is one of 2 doing that surgery (lucky for me) This one was sooooo much easier...except for the part where he had to open me up and remove all of the hardware...which you will not believe how much was there.....scary to see all of that stuff.... The new surgery would have been a piece of cake...speaking of spine surgery...if I had been doing the new one originially.....seriously....I am only taking 3 oxycodone 10's a day....that is nothing compared to what I was on before.... Thank you for your thoughts!!!
Sage

Hey!!! I made it....I'm home...actually came home on SATURDAY. Amazing. They had to remove all of the old hardware....you would not believe how much stuff was in my back.....I can build a picture robot with all of the pieces and parts....(strange sense of humor) )sp. wrong!! Surgery started as a nightmare, from what I hear....somehow the anesth. causes a hemmorage from my nose....but they managed to stop it...(must have been bad...they washed my hair...husband said when he first saw me I looked really bad...full of old blood...all over. They asked the surg. if he wanted to do the surgery...did he want to cancel....he did the surgery....(can you imagine....I don't think I would have gone back if they had cancelled....also, he wasnt' in the or when I had the horrible horrible nose bleed...hemmorage....so he could not tell me anything about it....hmmmmmmm. Well, I was in there for 5 or more hrs....they opened the old incision...took out the hardware, and yes, Frosty, I did feel pinching on occasion also...Hubby had jokingly said to the Dr. he'd like the hardware.....well, they cleaned it up, autoclaved it and presented it all to him in a baggie.....AMAZING. The new incision is so much smaller...and from what I experienced from the old surgery and now this one.....hey folks....the new one is sooooooooooooo much better....I am not experiencing the kind of pain I did from the first surg. I am only taking 3 oxycodone a day to control pain....and that is 8 or 9 hrs. apart...so you can see this is much better. Pray that this works....I think it is, already the pain in ankle and foot/leg are GONE....yup...this may be good....but we can't say too much too soon...jinx it...nope. Just wanted to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers....I'll come back....and let you all know how I am doing....oh...also, hubby had bought me one of the little 3 wheeled scooteres...it is the best thing....the best....he got it used...very gently used!!! The best!!! Life is good today... take care....

Sage

I'm so happy to hear all your positivity! It really sounRAB like such a huge difference from your first experience! So glad you are ok! Good luck with the recovery!
My dad's having his surgery RIGHT now...L2-5. HOpe he finRAB it a breeze as well:)

Sage:

How long did they keep you in the hospital? Did they go through the back? In February I'm having all my L4-S1 hardware taken out and then either L3-4 fused or possibly L3-S1.

You have been through so much Sage that I wish you the best with your recovery and will hope and pray that all goes well. I have not posted here that much, but I also suffer from SI joint pain (bad - lots of treatment but no surgery) and I have followed your posts and your ordeal. I know that this is a rare operation and only reserved for people who have no other option. I wish you the best. Relax, rent movies, read and let others serve you. Lisa.

Leslie:

What type of surgery did you have? What area of the spine?
Im glad you are doing well. I hate reading all the horror stories on here.

Good Luck, Joe.

Hi Leslie,

That;s pretty good, that everything went well on your surgery. You were very brave and wish you the best of health.and a speedy recovery.

spine, sorry to hear of the upcoming surgery, the hardware for the si joint was removed from a new incision following the original incision.....along the sacrum....several inches..... The new SI joint surgery was done on the outside of the buttock...under the muscle..and surprisingly that hasn't been too much of an issue....the removal of the spare parts and pieces, well, compared as to when it went in.....it is sore....but not the major hurt that ws there when it was installed. It is just the nonmobility issue with this surgery...no weight bearing on the right leg for several weeks...to 3 months...depenRAB when it stops hurting and I stop taking meRAB....but the way I feel right now...hummmmm....if all goes on this way....4 weeks..maybe 6 and I willl be trotting off..!!! Good luck to you...don't be too fearful...it isn't as bad as it sounRAB...really....the worst for me was the anesthesia....another story!!!
Sage

Sage,

I'm so happy to hear you made it through the surgery and that you're doing so very well! I know you were really dreading the surgery and the anesthesia. Just stay off that leg while the doctor tells you to so you can hopefully heal and fuse this time. We're praying for nothing but positive reports from you here on out!

I'm practicing on some crutches for my left SI joint fusion in a few weeks. I've never had to use crutches before, and I think not being able to walk for at least 6 weeks is the part that's making me most nervous about the surgery. At least with my 3 back surgeries I was able to walk after surgery.

Take care!

Thank you all for all of your kind thoughts and worRAB....I am doing better every day...and yes, this surgery is much better than the 1st one....the new proceedure is much better....so much less invasive....long recovery still...but sooooo much better.

Calligirl...if and when you are ready for the SI surgery....go for the new one...only done by 2 drs. so far....but really, really worth it...investigate.....I'll let you know my DR....and there is another in NH....having experienced both types of surgery...well, the last one is the way to go.... Take care....Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all and may you all have a better New Year...

Leslie

Sage, dear.... you certainly deserve an  or two looking after you. You have been thru so much and just keep on pushing. Although I am not on the board to much these days, please know that you and many others remain in my thoughts and prayers. Take care and no taking care of any family merabers....this time just let yourself heal, please.

((Hugs))

Man,,,,hope that your Dad did well, and that his surgery is a successful present for Christmas....let him recover FAST and go on to enjoy a wonderful new year....
Sage

Dear Diet....I have missed you...thank you for your thoughts and prayers....I am progressing...this surgery seems to be much less invasive...unfortunately, all of the other hardware had to be removed....and that I am very aware of ....I think I see a difference.....am hoping that this is not my imagination...but feel that it is better....think that I am being left with surgical pain....and bone pain from where the hardware was removed.... Only taking about 3 oxycodone a day....that is much better. Please have a healthy new year....I think of all of our old frienRAB!!!!! Take care.
