I'm hearing a loud whinning noise when i steer my 2001 ford escape. suggestions?

When i start my car what sounds like an air leak starts coming from my brake peddle and when i tap the brakes it interrupts the sound of the air flow. it has been doing this for some time and i havent had any other problems with that and now just recently my car makes a whinning sound when ever i steer. what could it be and how expensive could it get?
 
The air leak is probably a vacuum leak to the power brake booster. Might be as simple as a bad hose, could be as bad as a diaphragm in the booster. The whining sound is likely low power steering fluid.
