Im having trouble with the HTC legend!

So, I bought my HTC Legend yesterday and everything works fine but the fact it says that i'm connected to 3G. I haven't bought a subscription thingy so I can be out on 3G without any costs. When I first started up the phone I choosed a option that said
"Only WIFI". I connected to my wireless internet and still it says "Telia Sweden 3G". My question here is, is this costing me a bunch of money? I mean, if I checked in "Only WIFI" it should only connect to WIFI, right? I asked my brother that has alot of experience in these kind of phones and he said "Nah, that 3G thingy only appears there, you are connected to WIFI". But I have a feeling I cant trust him. Please help me out with this one because I dont want my next bill to be bigger then what I earn /month!
 
For starters 3G means that you are to the local 3G network which is capable of delivering the Internet if you have selected wifi only for your Internet then you need to turn your wifi on to do so you can test your settings by leaving your wifi off and then trying to open your browser it should ask you to turn the wifi on.
