First of all, what size is your tank? does it have a filter? heater? How long was the tank set up before you put fish in there? What temperature is the water before you put it in the tank? We need more details.

hey there, i seem to be having alot of trouble with my tank. everytime i do a water change my fish seem to die. i fill a bucket with tap water and condition it before i put in into the tank and everything but they just keep dying. i was told by the pet shop to do a water change every 2 days and by the way im going i will have none by the end of the week! my platy fry appear to be doing well, i have them in a breeder net hanging from the tank and i feed them the small fry liquid food also they get fish food every now and then. i feed the fish (guppies and platys) twice a day, not much each time, and i have a planted tank both live and plastic. i do have big mystery snails in the tank and am wondering if they could be the prob cause i have heard they are big waste producers. at the moment i have one guppy who looks like he is swimming for his life but just not moving anywhere and another one is sitting on the bottom of the tank and comes up every now and then for a swim but he has been doing this since i got him, i am more worried about the other one, can anyone fill me in??

You didn't say how big your tank is? I have never changed the water every 2 day. Maybe thats the prob?? The smallest tank I have is 10 gallon though. look at your filter and aerator(s). Maybe the fish were sick when you bought them. That happened to me once. I bought a fish and by the end of the week ALL of my fish were dead!!!
Are you checking the chem balance after you put the water in the bucket?
There are a lot of reasons a tank doesn't succeed.
good luck and don't give up. Once you figure out the right combination. Fish "tanks" are very rewarding!!

I have had 63liter tank for 8years. I have only changed the water once in 2weeks about 20liters. I think you change water too freequently and too much. Now if you have a small tank you might also have too many fish in it. I was told ground rule is 1cm of fish per 1liter of water. So in my tank there could be only fish whose total length together would be 63cm, so for instance (I have tetras) 10x5cm tetras +1 abt 10cm fish that eats food bits from the bottom of tank. Have you thought of some chemicals that make water better for your particular fish (for instance for my red-ghost-tetras that would be sera aqua morena) because it makes water the way it is in their natural inhabitat. Your fish if it is new one can experience just moving shock or be sick, time will tell. Good luck!
