I was driving my car (97 Accord) this week when it started making a noise like a chainsaw under the hood. The next day on my way home I was driving along and all of a sudden my battery warning light comes on, then my power steering stopped working, and about a mile after that my check engine light came on, and my car just barely had enough momentum with the accelarator floored to make it off the road before I turned it off. The chainsaw noises stopped after the check engine light came on. Did I throw a rod in my car, or is it something simple like the alternator or a fan belt or bad battery? Any advise on what the sound was and what could have happened to my car would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
Jen

Hi
yes i agree with first answer check you belt out it does sound like thats gone

your light and power steering all work off this belt so sounds very much like it

It sounds like you broke your fan belt. I'm not for sure if you have a serpantine belt or not. The one thing that has me confused is why your car had no power to get off the road. The chainsaw noise was probably the belt starting to shred up. Plus if you lost the belt it drives your power steering pump as well as your alternator which explains no power steering and your battery light coming on and also your check engine light coming on as well. Perhaps there is a vacuum pump that the belt also drives which might explain the power loss. Hope this helps...Good luck
