I'm having issues with my 97 Chrysler Sebring Convertable?

The car is shaking when I'm driving it, it's worse when I'm idle. The check engine light just came on..and when I got out of it tonight it smelled like a fire cracker had gone off.

It has like 145,XXX miles on it. Any advice or help...and please don't just say take it to the mechanic..I want that to be my last option...
