I'm going off to college soon...should I get a laptop or netbook?

Get a laptop. Take it everywhere.
DO NOT GET DELL.

If you want something you can work on seriously at the same time get a Vaio.
If you want something strictly for work, school, music, projects, internet, editing that kinda thing, get a Mac for sure.
If you can work, watch HD Blu-ray movies etc. with a TV Tuner and remote control, or play video games without lagging and in HD, etc. and at the SAME time have a software that allows you to do your work. Even if you are literally multi-tasking with your work open in one page and Halo PC in another the Hp is for you.

It all depends on what you expect to be doing in college.

But my number one rule is DO-NOT-BUY-DELL
 
Laptop.

Your fingers will cramp-up on that tiny netbook keyboards with all of the typing that you have to do.

Also, you'll want something with a bit more disk space.

Get a Macbook
 
College means you'll be doing a lot of work. A netbook's is primarily for surfing the web, so I doubt it has any multi-tasking capabilities or powerful for that matter.

When I went through college, my HP Laptop never let me down
