HELP PLEASE!? I'm going to be starting school in a couple of months and my mom and I were talking about getting a laptop. We're not sure what kind of laptop I should get and all we know is that I'm going to be using if for school of course (with papers and all that) and that isn't too pricey. I also want one for music and pictures, and one that won't give me a lot of problems. My mom and I aren't good with all this computer stuff, so if anyone could let us know what kind of laptop with the full details about it that would be great. =]
If you can, please tell me a specific name for the laptop, so that way my mom and I can check it out.

Dell has outstanding support that most larger companies and education institutions have relied on for quite some time now. As an IT professional myself, I would say that even a netbook would meet you stated needs as you aren't doing anything that is very intensive. The lowest cost will probably be a Toshiba (which are pretty good) or a Compaq (which I am not crazy about), but I like the accidental coverage offered by Dell. I would say spend the extra bit of dough to be covered in the case your laptop falls off a desk or bed and gets badly damaged.

The brands of laptops does not matter too much, as long as its a name brand such as dell, hp, acer, msi, lenovo, toshiba, sony, it will work just fine. Don't get macs, they are too expensive and inferior to pc laptops.

If you are not good with computers, I suggest going to a retail store (best buy, microcenter) and pick one out on the sales floor that you like. Most of the laptops nowadays have similar specs, so just pick the one you like the most and you should be good to go.

My personal favorite is lenovo, its sturdy and good quality. Don't get a laptop that is TOO cheap because those laptops will be useless in terms of technological advances in a year or two. You should spend somewhere between $600-800.

Most important thing to look at when you are picking your laptop:
Screen size
Weight (with and without battery)
Battery life
Warranty (especially the LCD screen)

other things to pay attention to, although they are pretty standard nowadays:
at least 3GB of RAM
at least core 2 dual processors (2.0ghz+)
at least 150GB of Harddrive
plenty of USB ports
Wifi (g/n)
DVD R/W ROM
Bluetooth

hp is the best. any hp will do but make sure it has lots of ram and hard drive space. don't go for apple they cost to much. 2 gigabytes of ram should do and 160 to 250 gigabytes of hard drive should work fine.

I would recommend a Sony or Dell laptop.
The Sony Vaio CR series notebook is the best suited for your use and its not very pricey. It suits all your requirments and much more.
