The prerunner just means that it is a 4X2. It doesn't mean anything different from the other Tacomas. I have read many great things about the new Toyota Tacoma. Make sure that you take a good test drive because I have read in several places that the seating position is too low for some people. That is not really anything to criticize about, but I just thought that you might like to know. Other than that it is a great truck. Also, if you find a good deal on a Nissan Frontier, take it. The Frontier is a great truck as well. Just stay away from American trucks, unless you prefer something bigger than a Tacoma. Then chose a Ford F-150, expensive though. I hope this helps.
