I'm confused as to why my behavior is considered ill mannered?

My last question addressed a situation where I allowed a young woman to do her job. If interested here see, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An9hAtwD9aePpFevqEPPUc7sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100408062534AApPm0R

* Basically, I did not offer to help a young saleswomen at the auto part store carry a car battery that I was purchasing. Unfortunately she kind of dropped it on her keyboard, while trying to place it on the counter.

Many wrote that I'm (ill mannered and just wrong). I should have offered to carry the battery and let her decide if I should help her.

Why should help be required to do a job she must be capable of doing since she was hired?

Additionally, I suspect the men over there likely get stuck doing much of the heavy lifting all day long. Should I mention the fair pay act to protect women.

On a side note in general, haven't modern women long since rejected many of the little things that were once considered little perks they used to do for men, which are now beneath them.

I guess I'm just ill mannered, because I do not offer women special treatment?
