I'm coming to America,is Cable TV Needed?

I'm trying to sort out my budget, I'm not sure if I need cable or not. Here in the UK we have BBC, BBC 2, ITV 3, Channel 4 and Channel 5, all show okay programs, so the need for cable here in the UK isn't that much of a problem and you can get by without it.

However I've heard that this isn't the case in America and you need cable to watch anything good, such as the Simpsons or another show.

Is this just rumors I've heard or are the standard channels pretty decent?
