I'm buying a fish tank this weekend, and need some help on which fish go well together?

The tank i'm buying is 5 gallons.. I'm going to set it up and let it circulate for a day then purchase the fish on Monday.. I'm new to this whole fish thing though so I just want to make sure I do it the right way... First question, how many fish could live comfortable in the tank? Also, I kinda want a little mix of fix... which fish go well together without fighting with each other..
How long does the tank need to cycle for?
 
The only fish really suitable for a tiny 5 gallon as a beginner would be a single Betta. It's too small for more active fish and shoaling fish like Tetras, Guppies etc. Not enough swimming space.

It also takes 2-6 weeks for a tank to be ready for fish, not a day!

you need to purchase a tank cycle it and then add fish you cant just let it stand for a day then add fish
a betta possibly for the tank or a couple of platties
