YOU HAVE NOT EVEN TEST DRIVEN A CAR, AND WORKED OUT PAYMENT PLANS? first, I would go see the car, try to test drive it cold, before he warms it up, and see if it will even run cold, second however is that Hyundai is not a very good car new, so do not expect a crappy new car to get better, third, what shop do you plan to take the car too? never ever buy a used car, unless you have some extensive mechanical knowledge, and with a car that year, you can have a diagnostic done, BEFORE YOU BUY and find out if the car is even worth 4,800 dollars, since most private parties do not take payments, if the registration is due now, it is his responsibility, but take the phone number to the dmv, look at the title and call the dmv ahead of time and check that there is no lien holder, and that there are no fees due. there is a fee for changing the title, it varies from state to state, but figure 50 to 100 bucks max, unless you need registration and plates, you need to see the title to make sure its clear.
I find it a little odd that you are making payments, is this guy a supposed Friend of the dealer, setting up deals for a car lot? if so, and they are advertising as private party, there is something odd. good luck, hope the car is in good shape, you may be paying on it awhile.
