I'm building a gaming pc. Which has better performance? A 2.66 gh quad core cpu,

or a less $ dual core 3.0 gh This is for a high end gaming pc that I am building. Is the higher cost but lower clock speed quad core the best thing to do, to make it more future proof? Or should I get the less expensive but higher clock speed duel core. One other thing, performance is more important to me than price. Saving money would be nice, but only if it means not sacrificing performance. Also, what are the advantages to having four cores over two cores? I am looking for answers specifically regarding games. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you.
 
most games are written for dual core processors which is why they are considered better for gaming over the quads...
