how you suppose to log roll if you can't?what be next solution?just slide to the edge of bed?sounRAB like another hard job

I just wanted to come back in and say hi to everyone and my surgery is over and I came home on Saturday 3/8/08. I am in a lot of pain and I don't think there is any way to explain to anyone the type of pain. I was doing pretty good until I had severe nerve pain in my left leg suddenly appear on Friday. I was having just normal surgery pain and went to bed and woke up with this terrible burning and stabbing that now limits my walking. They ended up finding 4 bone spurs that didn't show up in any x-rays or MRI's and my doctor said they had done a lot of damage. I guess nerves are suppose to be white in color and he said mine where as red as the red on the coke can. They have home health come by and see me which I saw on Monday and that will be all for them because insurance would only pay if I had to have dressing changed daily but physical therapy is coming by twice a week but they feel they can't really help me because of the severe nerve pain but they are going to try. They have all been very nice but said this nerve pain is so severe they have limitations on what they can do. I am so upset about this nerve pain because before it hit I felt pretty good.

So far no infection in the incision so I thank God for that. No sitting more than 15 minutes 3 times a day, no lifting more than a coffee cup and of course no lifting, bending and twisting.

I hope everyone is doing okay. I have been thinking about all of you so much every day and I know there is more to tell you but can't thinik right now.l

Hey Billy Boy how are you doing with your recovery and pain? I won't try and mention names because I don't want to leave someone out and you all have been the best.

My husband is staying home with me this week but I am afraid I will need him next week also and I don't think he wants to be here another week. I am having a lot of trouble pulling myself up into a standing position with my walker and I don't think my granRABon can do it( he's 13). I finally had the bowels move today after one whole week and I have been up and down and up and down all day. Sorry about the discussion but it sure is a main part of the recovery.

I want you all to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers always with you.

Gentle Hugs to everyone.

Linda

I know it will hurt some but you should try ( with some help of course)

Start by laying flat facing the ceiling...Are you able to turn onto your side??? Once you are on your side facing off the bed, you have to maneuver yourself to the edge of the bed staying in the same same position if you can, keeping your body parallel to the edge of the bed. Then you need to use your arms to edge yourself upright..keeping your torso straight. Use both of your arms to get yourself upright with your feet dangling.....then you can have your feet meet the floor.

It will hurt the first few times, but don't be afraid that you'll undo anything it will get easier...If your husband is there to guide you that will help too.

Also do ask your physical therapist to demonstate for you too..

Good luck and let me know how you do...The first few times I did this in the hospital it wasn't easy, but it did get easier and easier...

Did you have a fusion (with hardware...screws and roRAB??)

Hi Linda, and welcome home! Congratulations on your grand opening (again)!

I'm sure you're in a lot of pain right now, but just keep the pain meRAB up around the clock and rest as much as you can. You'll get stronger day by day and may find that you'll be able to get up and down by yourself by next week. I never needed help with that, even though it hurt, but I didn't have a lot of nerve pain. That puts it in a different perspective. I'm sure you know that nerves take a long time to calm down, anywhere from weeks to a year or more. Have they given you anything for the nerve pain? How are you tolerating the meRAB?

I'm glad your husband is able to be there at least for the first week. Let him pamper you! The less you have to do for yourself, the less stress and pain you'll have.

Take it a day at a time and don't worry too much about tomorrow. Let us know how you're doing when you're up to it.

And again I ca't stress how much the fitted bottom SILK sheets help you to slide....They have them online at JC Penney..well worth the investment..Or someone else suggested silk pajamas work well too...........

Welcome home! If you don't have the silk sheets, you can use a garbage bag under your hips when you do the log roll. Hope that nerve pain settles down it is the worst.

Hi everyone and I hope everyone is doing pretty good or as good as can be expected. I finally got some medication from the doctor for the nerve pain. It is Neurontin 300 mgs 3 times a day. I lost one day because the doctor's office didn't call me back so I can't say if this medicine is going to work or not but I am keeping my fingers crossed. I will start my first day of 3 times a day today.

This nerve pain is the worse I have ever felt and I have had it before with my neck surgeries. It is strange how it starts out because it runs horizontal then goes vertical which doesn't make any sense to me. But it is major and then I am also having muscle cramps because my husband was putting on some creme for muscles and he said you can see where the muscle is really tight. It doesn't matter if I move left to right or front to back it is still this same burning and stabbing pain. The doctor said nerves are suppose to be white but mine were bright red and since none of my reports even mentioned bone spurs he said there is no telling how long they had been pinched.

I am finding it easier every day to pull myself up on my walker by myself. I never did get me the satin sheets but will probably just use the thrash bag like Pepper suggested.

Physical Therapy at the hospital never did spend any time with me because when they came by my husband was already helping me and they said I didn't need their help. I told the nurses that my husband and I finally worked it out ourselves even if it did take us 3 days to do it.

Got to go back to bed. Hope you all have a blessed day.

Linda

Hi kyma,
Welcome back.God Bless you for handling the situation as you do.alot credit goes to all you people who under took such a task.should be rewarded somehow.I know diificult to describe the pain, but is this pain enough to tolerate or you constantly crying whining etc?I'm trying to see if these pain meRAB really help.

Hi Linda,
glad the surgery is all behind you now and you can concentrate on getting well. Take it easy, take your pain meRAB as prescribed and keep us posted.

Deb

Welcome home.Be patient the nerve pain will subside......each day will be better and better...........

Are you doing the log roll to get out of bed.supporting yourself with your arms????...DId you get silk pj's or sheets to help you slide to the edge of the bed? They really help...

Again be patient and rest...rest...rest...

I'm glad you are getting up a bit easier....I'm sure when the Neurontin kicks in you will indeed have some relief....

Hang in there....From what my Dr. tells me even if the nerves are damaged give them time and they will come back at least 85% after they haven't been compressed for a while...Be patient.........
