Which end should I start on? I am planning on going for about a month in warm weather

That depends on the time of year.. Right now it would be dangerous to start at the north end. It is bitter cold and storming up there. I envy you such an adventure. I am too old now to do that. I have read several accounts, and I guess it can get a trifle confusing in the north woods thanks to logging roads, etc. I read a terrific book written by a kid who walked the pacific crest as soon as he graduated from high school. He left Canada the last of may all alone. That's brave. Same thing there on the north end. He lost the trail several times in the high mountains in WA. You should definitely try to find that book. It was in the public library. It took him a long time, and he had some wild adventures. He took pictures, and it shows him meeting his father at the Mexican border. What an adventure, and it's free to anyone who can do it. So go for it. You will never regret it.

Personaly, I'd start at the end opposite from where I live so's I'd be walking home. and to Elk Creek- what is too old? I'm 51 and still goin'...and something else, do'nt be in a hurry, take your time, make camp early in the day, never push too hard, dont take risks, you've got a long way to go. Have fun and plod along...you'll see more!
