I'm a college freshman, i need a laptop. mac or pc?

im starting college in the fall and need a laptop. I want a place to write my papers, listen to music, and hold my photos. thats pretty much it. Is it worth it to buy a mac because its nicer, and i get a free itouch (which i need) but its over $1000, or do i get a PC that will get the job done? is mac purely about asthetics or is it really better than a PC?
