I'm 5'6 143lbs, Would a pit bike be to small for me ?

I'm trying to get a dirt bike, my friend recommends yamaha's but they look to big and to expensive ( Not to crazy about the way the look either )
So would a pit bike be to small for me?

- Do pit bikes break easliy?
- What would you recommend ?
- Any additional information welcome :)
