started on backpacking? I live in the u.s. (illinois to be exact) and i am willing to give everything up and see the world. Now, i don't exactly know how to approach and do this. I would love any tips or ANYTHING to help getting started or a how to...i want to see england, thailand, ireland, asia, south africa, EVERYWHERE! From someone who has experience on traveling or backpacking, what did you do? i dont have much money, but am willing to save until the summer...please anything you have is greatly appreciated.

Start saving your money. Do you have a marketable skill? Something that might rescue you if your stuck in another part of the world?

Ireland is cool, so is Europe, but expensive.

Buy a Eurail pass in the US. It allows you to travel by train in most of wurope for a whole summer at reduced cost.

there are many ways to see the world without spending TONS of money. hostels are a great way to stay somewhere CHEAPLY. you can go to europe and then get really cheap flights to go to other countries around europe. there is lots of mass transportation there. look up couchsurfing.com and gap years. plan to spend around 50 dollars a day, depending on how much where you're staying costs, and you can buy cheap meals.

My dad did the same thing! He traveled all over the world at your age. He went backpacking and hitchhiked and used public transport everywhere, even all the way to Greece! He was gone for months though. It depends how long you want to be gone! It seems that you want to be gone a long time. My dad met great people, got drunk for the first and last time (he had a very uncomfortable night barfing and barfing every minute) and he enjoyed it! Hitchhiking is scarier nowadays with freaky people but you just have to befriend them. Good Luck!
