Iin Photoshop CS4 Mac, I am having MAJOR issues with type/fonts!! HELP!!?

When I open the program, the "initializing type tool" potion of the software startup takes about 8 minutes!!! THEN, while working on any kind of file, I am freezing up like crazy. most commands take about ONE or more MINUTE each, the rainbow beach ball just spins and spins and spins. CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!
