IGN Roundtable : Launch Winner

So, on the new IGN roundtable, pretty much all the editors agree that Wii wins the launch with only a few minor hiccups, which every launch has. Then came 360 with its semi shortage and broken units, and in very last, Ps3 with its abysmal supply and no real launch lineup. So, thats all nice and good, but does a good launch actually mean anything for the Wii? Keep in mind that some of the editors who said the Wii won this launch also praised the Dreamcast launch, but look at how that system ended up.

So, what do you guys think? Can this good launch for the Wii predict how it'll end up?

well dreamcast worked out shitty for sega but everybody I knew who had one fucking loved it because they could pirate the living fuck out of it.

Launches CAN be somewhat misleading. I remember when the PSP launched there was a HUGE demand for it on OT. I was part of that buzz picking one up on launch day (3/24/05) ONLY for it to gain dust and be sold a year later. Nowadays the DS (Lite) has outsold with PSP with a 3 to 1 ratio and most companies are ditching the UMD format.

I don't think it'll be the same for the Wii though. We've got a definite winner our hands.

I couldnt agree with you more on this one. I think when Nintendo sat down and decided what they were going to do, they knew they were going to have to do something mindblowing. If they didnt they were going to get their asses kicked once again in the console wars. Im not dogging Nintendo in anyway, I LOVE the Wii, still trying to find one as a matter of fact. I think the Wii is almost a "gateway" system, so to speak, just to show us whats in the future for Nintendo. Good luck to them.

i can see the wii succeeding while the 360 and the ps3 will basically be chomping at each other. the wii will cater to the social gamers. I hardly played with my ps2 but i can't stop playing the wii. Its just a different type of gaming. Brings it back to the snes days. ahhhhhhhhh those were the days.

When it all comes down to it at the end... Sony is going to look like the loser, and Nintendo is going to look like a winner. I say this only because Nintendo is going to capture back a lot of the market share, whereas Sony is going to lose quite a bit to Nintendo/Microsoft. And I also think at the end of this... Sony is still going to have the most market share.

I think that, despite the Wii's success, it's all going to boil down to the software. Until Gears of War came out, the 360 was basically the run of the mill system. Oblivion wore itself out, Madden and NCAA were jokes, and despite good ratings, Ubisoft games weren't that great.

Here's where it stands.

The Wii has Zelda. Mario Galaxy, the new Smash Brothers, basically 1st party games that will either take it to the next level or basically end Nintendo's run at a serious console manufacturer. Sorry to be harsh but the N64 and GC prove that Nintendo has lost its edge. They are obviously great in the handheld segment, as the GBA, now DS rock every month with high sales and equally great software. The DS shows that its not always about the graphics.

The PS3 is a shot in the dark. Pushing both a new and unique chipset and an unproven successor to the DVD throne, they have a lot to lose... because the cell and the Blu-ray ties into a vast portion of Sony's future stock in electronics. Cell powered LCDs, cheap Blu-ray players for the masses, the stake here is a lot higher. Obviously, they've fumbled numerously with Kutaragi failing to secure exclusive titles (Assassin's Creed, GTA) and the damage at a late launch of the PS3 can't readily or easily be measured in lost sales against the 360, Wii, or what other franchises they've lost or are about to lose. But where the PS3 will succeed is in bringing so much more functionality to an already great system. Yeah, realistically, its not exactly on par with the 360. But the potential is there. You see it with the XMB, the playstation store (I hate that blue thing) and in that you have some options that the 360 doesn't have like web browsing and a built-in High Def DVD player. But again, software is going to be the big breaker for Sony. Whatever franchises they have left, if I were Hirai, I would be very personal and hard about producing quality titles from here on out. Don't give me a Madden that is a little better polished than the 360 version. I want my titles to stand out. Why should I buy a PS3 title that'll look just as good AND is the same game that will be released on the 360?

The 360... bleh. XBL is great and tagged with GoW and Halo 3, is the only reason why I'd keep one. The 360 launch was HORRIBLE and the only game worth playing at the time was COD2... with a honorary mention to PGR3.

IBM is the big winner here. All three consoles are powered by an IBM design chip, save the cell, which is an IBM/Toshiba/Sony project. But if they make (hypothetically) 10 bucks per processor on all three systems, DAMN.

This is where I think you're wrong.

I think they should go hand in hand.

Halo, for instance, was awesome gameplay and beautiful graphics... despite the lame explosions during cut scenes. I forgive Bungie for that mistake.

FFXII, awesome gameplay, awesome graphics. Again, hand in hand. One cannot truly thrive without the other. You'll always want more of one or the other.

i doubt any developers go about making games like "hey lets render a really pretty and detailed place on a video game console!" "okay!" and when they finish, "hey maybe we should make it interactive?"
