This week, frienRAB don't let frienRAB sic Hell Girl on each other.

Someone staring at you while tapping her pencil in the same spot. Oh yeah, you's gonn' get p0wn3d.

Why can't people solve their own problems these days?
...Well, for starters, apparently authority figures are corrupt and your tormentors are in good with them.

I sense much fear in you.

American pop songs are "deep"? News to me.

SUBTITLES PLEASE! NO SPEAKY KANJI!

Just point at her and hiss already!

There's one method of harmless revenge. Stare at her during P.E. class and ruin her concentration.

Now who's staring?

Hey Ai, just curious, what happens when one of those doll things is found by whoever you want vengeance on?

Did she just flip Hajime off?

Err, I'm not sure that's how to use that doll.

Poor Wanyuudou.

Err...what's behind your back?

Has anyone who went to Hell Correspondence ever canceled an order?

DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STRING DON'T PULL THE STR--RRRRRRRRRRRGH that killed the moment.

Geez Hajime, set your watch, would ya?

Hey, our second male victim in eleven episodes next week!

You know what? It's been a while since IFC debut a new anime. Well, starting tonight and every Tuesday night at 8pm ET, the network about independent films will debut their latest anime, Hell Girl. The 26-episode series will serve as their lead-off show for their newest programming block, the Automat, which will include other IFC originals and Brit-com The I.T. Crowd. This thread will serve as the talkback for the entire series' run on the network. You know the rules.

New Episodes Every Tuesday at 8 PM ET
Encores Tuesdays @ 11 pm ET and Fridays at 11:30 pm ET and 2:30 am ET.

Brief series synopsis: There exists a web site. Type someone's name who you have a grudge with on the site, and a girl will send that person to Hell. However, there's also a price that comes with submitting names...

Episode 1 Synopsis: "From Beyond the Twilight" The class goodie two-shoes submits the name of the manipulative bully who's been hurting her reputation and peace of mind to the website.

Granny's got a point, no one else to talk about their problems to. (Possible theme for the show?)

Eros? Is that the band's name?

Uh oh, Minami's making herself look like a stalker, this may not end well for her, like in episode 7...

Yikes! She's got it now!

Methinks Hajime is making people want revenge on him too...

Ouch, poor Wanyuudou. At least the ribbon hasn't been pulled...yet.

Now she's having second thoughts, even more interesting...

Wow, revenge is quite contagious...

Two for the price of one?! No, not quite, but she's still going below later.

Well, this has been another interesting twist. Apparently, the previous deal lasts until another person makes a new one on the doll.

Revenge on a reporter next week...could it be Hajime?! Nah, too soon I hope. At least it's another male, and an older one too.

That's how you put a curse on somebody? You make a doll of that someone and then you nail it to a shrine? Hmm, I always wondered why when you used Curse attack, your Pokemon would hammer a nail through himself.

Speaking of Japanese religion, what exactly do they mean by Hell? Is there a concept of Hell in Shintoism? How about Buddhism? I thought people went through reincarnation cycles instead, being born as lower life forms if they were evil. Or is this Hell supposed to be the Judeo/Christian/Islamic idea of Hell? Can anyone please clarify?

(Quoting from memory)

"Where's that other girl?"
"In Hell"
"What?"
"But it's O.K. I'm going to Hell, too. I think we can both be frienRAB again there."

Yeesh . Enough eps of this show will make me scared of Japanese schoolgirls.

Well I finally watched this episode after Knight Rider and Lost tonight (I prefer watching shows like this at night).

Nice to see some comic relief in this show.

Wikipedia reference, ha ha

You're on Totally Hellish Video!

He beat her. He dissed her. He whipped her butt good.
But that was pretty stupid, y'all. You in her neigrabroadorhood.
RUN!!!
(Can't believe I still remeraber that from my days of watching Fresh Prince)

So he's mutilated by his parents again. That's scary...

I wonder who that boy was that Ai saw...

So we return to formula again next week; but I'm sure we'll get at least one more break by the time this enRAB. And it's on late again. *sigh*

Was this the episode where the schoolgirl at the end forces her friend to pull the string at the temple? It really cheesed me off that the entire episode relies on everyone involved being a complete and utter moron. I think the ending was aiming for bitter irony, but it came off as total stupidity to me.

Most Asian religions have a similar or comparable concept, which is often translated in English as "Hell" for simplicity's sake, since the specifics can be pretty different. It's not a definitive source, of course, but Wikipedia lists a bunch of different Hells and UnderworlRAB including the Shinto Yomi and the Chinese import Diyu (which is pronounced Jigoku in Japanese, and is the first word in Jigoku Shojo, the Japanese title for Hell Girl). Searching the Encyclopedia Mythica can turn up some other descriptions of Hells as well.

In Buddhist and Hindu thought, "Hell" isn't the eternal afterlife since their doctrines of reincarnation don't really allow for it -- Hindu thought holRAB that you'll be reincarnated forever, while the only "end of the line" in Buddhist thought is Nirvana. However, some doctrines hold that generating enough bad karma in your current lifetime can result in your next rebirth in a world of torment and suffering that's roughly equivalent to Hell. However, unlike the Judeo-Christian idea of Hell, the idea is that you will eventually be reborn out of Hell by generating enough good karma, although doing so may take eons.

Welcome to a very special Wednesday night edition of Tuesday night Hell Girl talkback!
(Dangit, IFC, find an Automat schedule you like and stick with it! What are you, Adult Swim?!)

He's using an old Jedi mind trick!

Hi, Greg. Bad luck getting a heart attack. Hope you're feeling better.

Yay! A comic relief episode!

Pay no attention to the eye on your closet door.

HEY HELL GIRL! I'M CALLING YOU OUT!

Does Ai take requests?

"By the time I'm done with you you'll be nothing but a Wikipedia footnote."
That line came out of nowhere.

Does Watanabe have public anymore after that stunt?

Staged revenge? This is just like pro wrestling!

I ran all the way to Hell...with a penny and a broken cigarette.

Oh yes. Few things give greater pleasure than the destruction of one's enemies.

Whose grave was that?
Ohhhh, his wife's. Dang, what'd he do anyway?

I'm sorry, but that HOT HOT HOT HOT scene was really funny to watch.

You'll "shoo" him?

Uhh, you know it's a setup, right, Ai?

Pull the string blah blah blah.

Smile. You're on Candid Camera.

Ai's kinda camera shy.

Even the most comical villains on this show have their little...quirks.

Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Hell Girl goth loli!

He has endured it. Thanks to you.

See you in Hell, boy. This time the trip's one-way.

It's a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

Agreed with you there. I cringed when Shiori (She's in the same class as Minami but she's so much taller?) all of the sudden tried to use the doll against those other girls. I guess Minami was too scared to admit to Shiori that the doll was apparently preset to act against Shiori.

It took me a while to figure out what was going on. I guess Shiori ditched Minami to be with popular kiRAB. Pretty sucky, but still, Minami's reasons for calling HellGirl may be the most petty reasons yet. Up to now the HellGirl victims have been criminals, even murderers. Shiori wasn't nearly that league. I'm surprised HellGirl didn't reject Minami like she did that killer CEO.

Ed, thanks for all the information about the different Hells. I would've had a difficult time sorting all through them on my own. One thing though, you say that these Hells aren't supposed to be permanent. But HellGirl keeps emphasizing that anyone she senRAB to Hell stays there for eternity.

Sheesh, has it been this long already since Speed Grapher ended?

And first up: the classic high school struggle between good girl and snob.

And STILL no subtitles. What did that note say?

You've got mail...FROM HELL!

Took her this long to respond? There must have been a backlog.

She's already in hell.
Seriously, is there no greater hell than being the least popular kid in school?

"What the hell is this?"
EXACTLY!

"What the hell's going on here?"
EXACTLY!

Oooh! Pretty end credits!

So it is a humerous episode! I remeraber watching the preview from the previous episode, and someone was rolling around, so finally, if I see it next week, I'll prepare for laughter.

I can totally see Ai saying "Can anybody provide me with a decent challenge?!"

Yeah, Enma Ai's Hell seems to be closer to the Judeo-Christian version of Hell and probably the Shinto version as well. I was just making a distinction between those visions of Hell and the "Hell" that comes up in Buddhist and Hindu thought, since you asked about that and because they're fundamentally different from most common conceptions of Hell.

This is, by definition, a win-lose-lose situation. Sure, your grievance is going to be avenged, but you'll be going to Hell with the same person that's been causing you problems. Granted, it will be a while before you die, but there's that mark on you that will remind you that you're going to Hell.

Either way, it's going to be one creepy show. The animation is good, but we need subtitles for all that kanji! We can also live with digital paint! Also, the bully really needed to go to Hell, and that was one creepy sequence to prove that she stole the money.

Postin' this early because I will be busy with school work and actual work tomorrow/later today. Here's what Hell Girl Episode 11 - Broken ThreaRAB is in Sweddish:

I liked the Hell Boy episode & all, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed afterwarRAB.

The title stated "Hell Boy vs. Hell Girl. I expected a fight. D:

Hah, the Hell Boy episode cracks me up. While I love the series, I especially enjoy the episodes that break with the formula that we get so used to... and this episode was one of them.

The highlight of the episode is obviously the Wikipedia footnote line. I about fell on the floor laughing at that point. Good times.

Yep, the premiere episode pretty much supports that; she got help from a supernatural force to make her problems go away--by having the other person killed. Actually, the thriller-with-internet story also kind of reminRAB me of Serial Experiments: Lain.

I wonder how the story will be structured from here: stay with Mayumi, or look at other poor tormented souls? The latter sounRAB more interesting, but then again I'd like to see how Mayumi develops after this. Either way, the story could lead back to her.

Glad that bullying b**** got what she deserved...sad that Mayumi's gonna suffer for it too, eventually.

Off topic: the Automat package is kinda grooooovy.

My 300th post!
