If you were having a political debate with a relative, how would you respond to this?

I am having a heated debate via Facebook with a relative .. If you are anti-Obama and a strong republican, how would you respond to the following?

You really think we should have kept more troops in Iraq? Your cousin is a veteran of that war. He served as an officer it Baghdad airport while bombs blew up around him. Colin Powell even showed up in front of his tent (along with the news media) while he was there. He and many of the fellow military people he was with in Iraq came back to the US and campaigned enthusiastically for Obama, largely because Obama was willing to get us out of Iraq. Why do think we should have stayed?

As for health care, what do you think is the solution? I've had students not able to attend school for months at a time because they were sick and had no insurance. Do you really think we should just leave things as they are and let people who can't afford health care stay sick? Also, many people currently stay in dead-end jobs to preserve their health insurance. People really do die because they are uninsured. Canada has universal health care and the average person pays less for health care and on average lives longer and likes their health care better than people in the US.

this will be tough as the relative you are speaking with is a teacher and is there for employed by the same government you are opposed to.
some have a very hard time going against those that feed them.

I would say we stayed because we were able to get rid of Saddam the butcher and bring democracy (Jimmy Carter's dream) to Iraq. It is now largely stabilized even though that was not particularly a goal.

He lies, or the students lie, that illness kept them out. What common illness lasts for months, and which ones among typical student illnesses can be prevented by any kind of health care?

Are Canadians so spoiled as Americans who expect their doctors to coddle every little complaint? Americans would bankrupt the system even faster than the Candians are theirs.

Hit them with facts. They hate facts. First:
First, during the 2004 election, which was a tight race between Bush and Democrat John Kerry, those who were currently serving in the military supported Bush almost 4-to-1 according to a poll done by the USA Today. That’s when the war was much more popular though. Currently they are probably opposed to a Republican and “another four years”, right? Well in the 2008 election, a poll by the Military Times showed service members favored McCain by a 3-to-1 margin, even with 79 percent of the black military votes favoring Obama. Clearly they must believe in the war and their mission.

As for health care, people live longer, not because health care is better. But because Americans are not healthy, eating McDonald's, drinking, and smoking. Most canadians like health care, you know why? Because most are healthy. Everyone loves that that don't have to pay....until they get sick. Then they come here. A snipet from a yahoo article about British Health Care that everyone raves about:

"Doctors and nurses warn that the organization faces a 15 billion pound ($24 billion) deficit, and NHS hospitals are often overcrowded, dirty and understaffed. Many people have to wait weeks or months for medical care despite government promises to shorten waiting lists."

So the healthy love it. How about the poor people that need it? Other than the huge cost, overcrowded, and long waits, it's great?

Hope this helps.

You can debate the argument about Iraq using the same empathy they used in the argument about health care, people are dying, they may not be American (brace yourself, as an indoctrinated member of American society you have ethnocentric tendencies and this will crush them) but what responsibility do I have for my neighbors that I don't have for those in Iraq? Is it because they live closer? Because they are more like me? People with power have a responsibility to help those without it, you're a Democrat, surely you understand this.

As for the second part, you may want to give up on it. You can't really argue money vs. well-being, money always loses unless you wish to be considered as someone who puts money before your fellow human beings.

Well we certainly don't seem to be doing very well with his war in Afghanistan, we have had more causalities in the last few weeks than there had been in a long time ! Yet we are told it isn't going well !

People stay in dead end jobs for the insurance, can't say as I know many people like that. If they have a marketable skill they could find a different job. As for kids being sick for months , give me a break . The relative is naive to buy that ! They will get treatment in the ER, and frankly most of them have hardship cases , where they forgive the bill. I have known a couple of people that have used it .

I can not say much about the troops that enlisted, it was their choice, I personally hate war and see no point, however the libs and your current politicians do not seem to value the promise to bring them home.Edit: And for your information the troops wanted Ron Paul as president, a man with integrity. You should do your research, and not listen to the bought and paid for media.
A little clarification

So let me get this straight…

This health care plan will be written by a committee whose head says he doesn't understand it,
passed by a Congress that hasn't read it and whose 20 members will be exempt from it,
signed by a President who smokes,
funded by a Treasury chief who did not pay his taxes,
overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese, and
financed by a Country that is dead broke..

…what could possibly go wrong?
Edit: You are welcome, pass it on.
