If you travel to the ionosphere in a helium balloon during a geomagnetic storm...?

...and you bring a large & powerful bar magnet with you, is it possible you would observe (mini?) auroras near the poles of the magnet? Suppose you are outside of the auroral oval (near the equator).

Why or why not?
And wouldn't that be nifty?
