if you sign out of chat on facebook, can your friends still see if you are on line?

I don't have time to chat most of the time and I do not want to hurt my friends feelings.
Thank You, I think that has done the trick! I am staying hidden unless I want my friends to know! facebook chat kind of sucks anyway...it is sooooooo slow!
