support for Israel? In looking at many answers, it seems no one is comfortable with accepting that modern Zionism has its roots in European intellectuals who were no longer so enamored with Jewish religious tradition and unable to assimilate in Europe for various reasons (anti-semitism being one). The founders even considered Argentina as a national home. It was quite a secular and yes, colonial, movement.

It was the 19th century after all.

Does knowing the history behind it alter our mostly unconditional support for Israel?

it's interesting that the hasidic jews don't acknowledge the jewish state, as the torah says that israel will be returned to the jews by the messiah, and not before. the hasids think the zionist jews kinda "sold out"

my brother visited Israel in sept.

when he came back he said most of the "attacks" by Palestinians and Israeli muslims were actually retaliations for jewish attacks.

but the US and UK news sources only give us the jewish side of the story because we are all allies

No! Israel belongs to the Jews! The PLO, HAMAS, other Terrorist organizations do not have any claim to the land.

No, because that history is overshadowed by the Holocaust, which made clear to the world that the Jews needed a country of their own. And the history since 1948 is also important. Not a single Arab country recognized the partition of Palestine, and immediately declared war on Israel upon its founding in 1948. Not a single Arab country agreed to take in a single refugee from Palestine, allowing them to fester in refugee camps to this day, while Israel took in a population of Arabs who now number over a million, and who are now citizens of Israel. As soon as Israel's neighbors grant Israel the right to exist, they can have peace. When Egypt agreed that Israel has the right to exist, Israel returned the entire Sinai to Egypt and the two countries have lived in peace ever since. As soon as Hamas and Hezbollah and Syria and Lebanon and Iran agree that Israel has the right to exist, they will have peace also.

ABSOLUTELY NOT, AT THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR AND THE HOLOCAUST, THE JEWS REALIZED THAT ONLY BY HAVING A LAND OF THEIR OWN WOULD THEY BE SAVE. OF COURSE THE LAND THAT THEY WOULD CHOOSE WOULD BE THEIR ANCIENT HOME.

Zionism is racial movement. Like the KKK.
The UN called Zionism is based on race and that was a racism.

No, If you look at the history of the world, every nation used to be part of some other empire and lost out at a later date. The world has always been at war and will continually do so into the future. Might as well support a democracy that promotes individual liberty and does not go for all the oppression that the Islamic countries seem to enjoy so much.

Of course, that's the main reason Israel is there, and the main reason so many Christians support Israel being there. It's all about religion, it's all about the coming (or second coming) of Christ. For that to happen, Israelis must be in the land of Israel.

At least that's what their fairytale books tell them.

Why don't you learn the true history of Israel. The Jews first came there in the 1890's and bought the land from absentee land owners. Mark Twain went there 5 years after the civil war and later wrote that you could ride on a horse for days and not see a village or human. The place was desolate until the Jews came in,irrigated the land, planted crops, built cites with banks, schools, and shops. After they made the land useful the Palestinians wanted the land back.

I for one have done research on both sides and I fully support Israel.
