...even need a filter? If you have a few algae eaters in a fish tank do you have to clean the tank?or even need a filter??
 
Yes you still need a filter and do a weekly water change. They do not keep tanks care free and depending on what type of algae eater (pleco) you get the cheap ones found in most pet stores are often lazy and don't do that good of job to begin with.
