If you hate the newer Simpsons seasons, why do you continue to watch?

This is what I don't get. People who say Simpsons went downhill still continue to watch every week.

If you don't like the newer seasons, why do you continue to watch the show? All the old seasons are on DVD, you could just buy those and stop at whatever you considered the last "good" season.

Yet in the review threads week after week (not just here, on other forums) people continue to complain how bad Simpsons is or whatever.

Why watch something you don't enjoy? This is what I don't understand.

The Simpsons is like that person you married years ago that pisses you off currently after spending so much time with them, yet they're like a comfort food to you. You're used to them.

Meh, I actually rebounded this year and its slowly declining.

I shifted to one of the cartoon channels before promptly turning the tv off due to a live-action movie.

*shrugs*

Meh. It's not as good as it used to be, but I still find it entertaining. My standards for entertainment aren't very high - if it can keep my attention, it gets a passing grade in my book. :D

I think its case where the show had so many classic seasons and the influence it has left over the American animation industry(and even the non-animation industry). Even if the current seasons aren't that good, you watch it out of respect.

I only stay tuned for Bart, he's my favorite character of the show. But I hardly check in on it these days, I've mainly just been watching Family Guy and King of the Hill. I do only watch the DVD's.

Because I like the show and don't hate it.

I don't think it's anywhere near as strong as it was in the first 10 seasons, but I still enjoy the show.

I keep watching mostly because I'm used to doing so, and because it's interesting to see just how bad it gets. I think multiple people have made some good analogies about it being similar to a slow-motion car crash... something about how you can't turn away no matter how bad it is. I can't remember exactly, but that sort of sums it up. I also find it helpful to try and figure out what exactly I dislike about the new ones, compared to the old ones, because then I can try to make sure I don't do the same things in my own cartoons.

That, and sometimes it's occasionally alright. There's always one or two lines that amuse me. I don't really watch it every week though.

I think they really still find it funny, they just like to complain. My brother sometimes complains about The Simpsons not being any good anymore, but sure enough, when a new episode comes on, he'll laugh.

It's a good past-time these days. But nothing more. I think I finally lost my patience with The Simpsons when my favorite character of all time (Gil, poor old Gil) got his own episode... so today I neither comment on the episodes nor watch the new episodes (unless I happen to come across them while zapping for something to entertain myself with for the next 20 minutes)

I guess the episode that broke the camels back for many was the one where they completely changed Marge and Homer's past, telling their new story on how they were a young happy 90's couple. The only reason I tuned into the episode was to see Weird Al

I myself didn't stop watching out of interest but just got into other shows at the time including anime.

But for an estimated guess on why some still watch, I hear the show has been gaining some good quality back in the past couple season.

I do it becasue I've seen it from the start and want to say, "Hey, I've seen them all from begining to end."

But then again, I feel that people who seem to pose this question think the show is some sort of institution (like Christmas) and no one has the right to complain, or stop celebrating it.

Not... really. Believe me, if I found it consistently funny, I'd list all the stuff that made me legitimately laugh every week. And usually the list is fairly slim.

Why do I keep watching? Heaven only knows why. I haven't consistently enjoyed it for a while now. But it's a habit. There's little else on Sunday at 7. And occasionally, there's a gem.

With most long running shows there's always a point where things stay past their welcome anime or otherwise. For me a lot of The Simpsons episodes I TRULY loved happened in the earlier seasons when the show had much more heart and soul. I also loved the movie because I do feel that was a second wind for the people doing the show. Right now the show is just there, it doesn't try to be anything remarkable or different. It paved the way so we could have shows like Futurama, Family Guy, King of the Hill, South
Park, and American Dad. Remember when it came out it's adult humor was more controversial as opposed to it being fairly common in prime time animation in the present.

O-chan

Well besides being a loyal fan of the franchise I also do think that there are some episodes that are funny of it (I did enjoy the first two episodes of the season a fair bit) so I'm not going to give up just because there are some lame episodes mixed in so long as there are some good ones. Besides there is some fun in complaining and pointing out the faulty moments of the later episodes since they make for more interesting review points then "oh look this was so great blah blah blah."
