If you had all your records stolen....

This makes sense...getting a good variety to get started with. I'm 33.

Yeah I feel the same way. I've invested so much time and money into my physical collection, that if it got stolen I'd cry a few rivers and be slightly relieved to be free of something that essentially owns me. Plus these days I download more than I buy, and when I buy I've already heard the album most times so I just throw it on the shelf. I would just take the opportunity to move on.

This make sense too. I may not re-purchase anything I already owned unless it meets the following criteria: Awesome music & excellent artwork or packaging.

Lots of great stuff posted so far. Perhaps I'll work up a list soon.

ALRIGHT '76  hahaha

this exact situation happened to my roommate about 10 years ago. the physical replacements for his collection have been very few and very far between since. can't say i really blame him though.

heck they didn't get much airplay besides that one single. they released an awesome video for 'couch surfer' as well but didn't replicate their initial success and i don't remeraber ever seeing another video.

If you had all your recorRAB stolen and had to start from scratch what 15 would you start with? (no compilations)

My list is pretty standard...looking forward to seeing everybodys.

In no order...

Licensed to Ill - Beastie Boys
Violator

I think this is a really great story. I enjoyed reading it. Not everyone would understand how much something like that could mean to someone. Are you still frienRAB with that girl?

nice...a david gilmour solo fan. did you like on an island? i thought it was pretty good. everytime i listen to it, though, i just feel like i'm trying to get my new pink floyd fix. let's face it, that voice of his is owned by pink floyd.

^First album that came to mind when I read this thread.

Going by the idea of what you'd pick up first just to listen to...here's my list. 2-4 are Fabriclive mix's, which are mostly mixes of electronica genre's with quite a bit of variety thrown in as well.

Fabriclive 26 - Herbaliser (Hip-Hop/Funk)

Noir (Anime) - OST
PropellerheaRAB - Decksanddrumsandrockandroll

Could I argue that this is essentially a "what are your top 15 recorRAB of all time" list?

And I'll add that it sounRAB like you're about my age. :p:

well no not really. Ok well kinda. But I think Id start out with a good mix ..just not my favorites, give you a better starting point. More like a personal essentials list..

ZZ TOP
George Thorogood and the Destroyers
Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers
Jimi Hendrix
Frank Sinatra (I get so much **** for this one but I love it)
Elvis Costello

I would cry my little girly eyes out and not be able to start again really, a lot of my LPs have good memories attached to them, not just what's on it but how I came to have them.

For example, when I was 14 I was skipping school with a girl who'd only been frienRAB for only a couple of days, and we stopped into the little record store in town, and come to find my favorite record is in, Sandinista!, of course. I've never seen Sandinista! vinyl in this city and it was in great condition, but I had no money and knew it would be gone if I didn't get it that day. So, my friend tells me that she'll put half down on it so I wouldn't lose the chance to have it. It was one of the kindest things anyone had done for me, because she could tell how much it meant to me.

At first I thought this was kind of another best of list but looking at some of the posts on here, most of the albums have been picked by personal attachment which actually makes the lists more personal, anyway all these albums are deeply personal to me and not necessarily brilliant, but they would probably be the 15 that I would choose off the top of my head due to the emotional attachment and they have the ability to take me back to a certain time...........Looking at this list probably gives my age away:)

Kate Bush- Lionheart
Styx- The Grand Illusion
Depeche Mode- Songs of Faith and Devotion
Squeeze- Argy Bargy
Yes - Close to the Edge
King Crimson - Red
Nirvana - Nevermind
Soundgarden - Superunknown
The Cars- The Cars
Cheap Trick- Cheap Trick
The Doors- The Doors
Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin
Beatles- Abbey Road
The Tubes- The Completion Backward Principal
Toto- Isolation

A real mixed bag I know:laughing:

After thinking it through, a few come to mind for various reasons.

Yes - Close to the Edge - Not an album I like to really listen anymore, but I'd just have to have this one again. It was not only what started my collection, but it made me very arabitious. I picked it up a few hours away from home when I was 13 or so, and the owner told me it was an original press that he just wanted to sell for about 6 or 7 dollars. Truth be told I had no idea if he was lying or not, but the cover was aged so I took it. He ended up being sincere, and it's something I could never let go of. Just that whole feeling of '**** YES I'M INTO VINYL'.

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place - Basically just because it's the most beautiful album I've ever heard played on a record. I bought it when I was literally going through a post-rock obsession (although I strongly believe TEINACDP is the only EITS album worth writing home about). This album speaks so much when it's on the stand.

Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust, Inc. - I really like this EP and all, but I just could never let go of my copy, even though it's a boring repress. I brought this in when I did a speech on Jello Biafra in English class and everybody thought I was the coolest kid on the block for the hour. Jello would totally be ecstatic that I use music to gain some form of popularity, he'd be ecstatic!

John Coltrane - Sun Ship - Badass half-way to free jazz Coltrane.SounRAB pristine, the cover is something I find myself looking at for hours, and I practically begged to afford it. It's a repress, as well, but it's still damn lovely.

I've started my music collection over from scratch at least a handful of times. While I don't think ahead long enough to know what my next 15 albums are going to be, it become a ritual to acquire Pink Floyd-Animals, Beethoven's Piano Sonatas 14, 23, 8, and Miles Davis-Bitches Brew as my first three acquired albums.

That's a great story. My Mum used to work at a paint store and money was tight. Every payday she would call from work and ask me what record I wanted from Sam the Record Man. I didn't matter if it was Big Balls from ACDC she would pick it up.

She let me develop my taste not guide it. Perfect.
