If you got the flu, can you go to the gym and "sweat it out"?

I'll be honest and say I'm a gym rat. Lately, I caught the flu, and I'm weak, body aches, sweating profusely, etc. I haven't gone to the gym since (no strength). A friend suggested I go the gym and do high reps, to "sweat it out". Does that work, or will I prolong my sickness?
I have this Rambo mentality. I hate sitting around doing nothing!
