If You dont eat all your calories do you lose weight?

i live in the uk/f and we did an experiment in science on how much calories you need a day and mine was sumthing like 1400, i love my food + im size 12 so dont go calling me names lol but if a person does not eat all the calories they are required to do they lose weight? im not talking about starving yourself im talking about eating but not as much as they should do to meet how many calories they need thanks x
