If you dine out often, please answer me this?

I work in the service industry, and I simply cannot believe how frugal some people can be! Here are a few examples:

We have happy hour Mon-Fri. In order to get these specials, you MUST sit in the bar. It's a BAR SPECIAL. Sitting in the dining room means you cannot receive happy hour. We have it this way to promote the dining room to be a more "family-friendly" area. Yet, people still b*tch and complain every second they get. I am sorry, but it's just the rules. Your server has NO CONTROL over these rules and you are no exception to them.

If you want extra dressing for your salad after it already came out and you ate half of it, if you want to substitute your fries for a pricier side (like veggies) we MUST charge you. And it's not a ridiculous amount either. Nobody gets anything for free. This is a rule from the Chef. So, your bartender or server cannot change this. We don't have the ability to go into the kitchen and grab things ourselves. A ticket proving you are being charged must be back there in order for you to receive your extra dressing, or your veggies instead of fries. Again, nobody gets anything for free. I am dumbfounded on how many people expect this.

When it comes to food times, your server and bartender has no control over how long it takes. So please do not take it out on them. You see that the restaurant is busy. You had to wait 30 minutes to get your table. We aren't going to drop everything so you can get your food out in ten minutes. Everyone is working as hard as they can for you. Unless you have worked in the business, you have no idea how hard we bust our asses.

So why do people tip crappy because of things that are out of everyones control?

And by the way, any tip less than 20% is unacceptable. If your server did a great job, stayed on top of the game, was friendly..leave an extra few bucks. People that have never worked in the business have no idea how hard people in the restaurant industry work.

Now, if your server was slow, wasn't friendly, and generally did a bad job, don't over tip. But you have to understand we RELY on tips to make a living.

And please, stop being so cheap!!!

Any thoughts/comments/concerns/raves will be appreciated.

:)

Uh--what's the question? Seems to me you just wanted to gripe about your job and it sounds like you hate it. And if 20% is unacceptable don't accept it--give it back to the nice gentleman who over tipped you. Even in 4 star restaurants, 15% is the expected.

Sorry sweetheart, saying "any tip less than 20% is unacceptable" is ridiculous. Twenty percent is for very good service, 15% is for acceptable service, 10% for marginal, and if the service stunk, well, that means zero. I do know how hard service people work because I did it myself, but I also know the tip has to be earned. I don't take it out on the server if the place is busy and it takes a while to get the order delivered. I do, however take it out on them if they aren't attentive, like not making sure the drinks are refilled, not checking back a few minutes after the order is delivered to make sure we don't need anything, and worst of all, being impossible to find when we are ready for the check. I was at once place where we waited 20 minutes after we finished eating for the check, and ended up asking for a manager so we could pay and leave. Guess what.... no tip.

As for this comment: "Now, if your server was slow, wasn't friendly, and generally did a bad job, don't over tip. But you have to understand we RELY on tips to make a living." : Like I said before, that kind of service merits no tip at all. If they are depending on it for a living, they need to do their job. I'm not rewarding bad service.

I'm no scrooge, I am very generous if the service was good, but on the other hand, if it stinks, well, tough luck. I've been known to tip 50% on a bill for a guy that did something special for my brother when I took him out for his birthday. So don't call me cheap if you're not doing your job.

Sweetheart, if you hate your job, please find a better one. I go to work everyday, take care of my two kids, and go to college so I don't have to be a waitress. How can you tell me that anything under 20% is unacceptable? Tips are NOT REQUIRED!!! They are optional. What makes you think I am going to wait an hour to get a table, then 30 more minutes for my food, and then tip you 25%!?! Just because YOU have a shitty job! No, ain't gonna happen.

to the HA you wish broad who posted before me.....

[[HA! You Wish!]]?
Your comment about the 15% tip really urked me. You said you work, go to college, AND raise kids so you don't have to be a server? What makes you think you're better than me? I am in college, graduating this June, so I don't have to serve and bartend forever. Get off your high horse...you should've gone to college and finished BEFORE you started to have kids.

And by the way- serving and bartending is a GREAT way to make GREAT money. It's cheap welfare Mother's like you that make our jobs hard, and the tips sh*tty because you can't afford to go out. You can take your bad attitude and bratty kids to McDonalds if you aren't going to tip appropriately. And I said 20% is the norm...not 25%. I see that night school at the local community college is really educating you well!

you took the words out of my mouth. It is so frustrating when ppl complain about things that are not in our control. If your server did a great job, leave a great tip. When someone leaves a 10% tip, the server might get 6% of that tip because they tip out the bussers, the hostess, and the bartender. It seems unfair but that is how it is. So, next time consider these things when you want to leave $5 on a $100+ check.

me too! i totally agree! but for ur problem i suggest medical help asap!hgvbn9tmuyhvgycfvth6ycbft5gycbv

i agree with most of it but i wouldnt say anything less than 20 is unacceptable...

and to all of you who think that 15 is the norm--- how come on large parties most restaraunts add an 18% gratuity!!! not 15

well mine still does 15 cuz its retarded but eveyone is bumping up to 18 because thats the new norm
