If you could fix the Dragon Ball Z remastered season sets.

Ideally, I would use the DragonBox masters.

If I was not able to use those masters, I would use the Ultimate Uncut versions or the original uncut analog masters used for the original DVRAB of the post-Namek Saga episodes. Heck, I would have been fine with the season releases if they just reused the older encodes of the uncut releases. None of this faux-widescreen garbage!

Hm, if I could fix these releases, I'd do the following:
1) Buy the Dragon Box footage from Toei and use that as the source material.
2) Keep the series in it's original fullscreen form.
3) Besides still including the Japanese music with the English dialogue, I would also have English dubs produced for Cha La Head Cha La, Zenkai Power, We Gotta Power and We Were Angels. The lack of dub songs really dissapointed me, especially since Dragon Ball and GT got them.
4) Include the Next Episode Previews.
5) Slightly different choices of cover art. For Season 6, instead of Super Saiyan Goku, I would use Super Saiyan 2 Gohan. For Season 7, instead of Piccolo (who's artwork is taken from Season 1, mind you), I would use Great Saiyaman. For Season 9, I would probably go with any of the Buu forms (except Evil Buu), but it is unknown what FUNi is choosing for that Season's coverart.
6) I would be A LOT more advantage of redubbing certain things. I would redub scenes with innacuracies such as Frieza's men being Bardock's men, Bulma knowing Goku since he was 5, and the completely innacurate version of the Red Ribbon Army's history stated by Trunks/Master Roshi/Android 20. I would also ask Sean Schemmel if he could fly in to redub most or all of his Season 3 lines. I also would have rewritten Vegeta's dying speech before redubbing that scene.

Schemmel really should redub Goku for season 3. It really isn't very good. Dubbed songs would be nice to. I have another question. Are the next episode previews different in the FUNI dub than the original?

Yes, but it would take up twice as much space on the DVD, meaning that either the episodes would have to be more compressed (read: lesser video quality) or that there'd have to be half as many episodes per DVD and, hence, twice as many DVRAB per set, which would drive the price up.

My biggest gripe is the fake widescreen. The lack of the original Japanese openings and the "Next Time On..." bits are annoyances, but at the end of the day, they're annoyances I can live with.

The orange color scheme is pretty ugly and tacky-looking, but that's a pretty minor consideration at the end of the day. Extras I could honestly care less about-- these days I have less and less time to spend watching DVRAB, and Lord knows DBZ has enough material to work through in the episodes proper that I don't really feel a burning desire for more.

I think the odRAB of there ever being a really "perfect" DVD edition of DBZ are low enough that I'm still buying these sets, but I'm buying them used so that I don't have to feel guilty about directly supporting Funi's lame decision to crop the footage for a fake widescreen effect.

I see that a lot of people are buying the boxsets because they feel they have no other choice.

Um...what about e-bay? I was able to pick up all the Cell discs, for example, for quite a bit less than I would have paid for the box sets. And I don't have to put up all the "remastered" garbage.

On-topic...with FUNi's constant re-imagining of the show in an attempt to hide the fact that this is a low-budget 15+ year old Japanese show, I'm really not holding my breath for any sort of "perfect" release.

The problem for many people is that the show wasn't fully released uncut/bilingual. For fans of the original japanese, the first two boxsets are the only way to get those episodes. So yeah, they have really no options for that aspect. (Besides not buying them of course.)

As for me, I pretty much echo what others have said: Either Dragon Box stuff or the previous masters put into boxset form.

The thing that ticks me off is the fact that we may never be able to see DBZ entirely in fullscreen form. The redub of season 2 may never see a fullscreen release and there for we will never get a proper release for the series in fullscreen. If only FUNI decided to go with the Ultimate Uncuts thru season 2 I would've probably just have bought all the old box sets.

-I would have the japanese openings and endings dubbed.
-Include the next episode previews.
-Fix the widescreen issue.
-Use the DragonBox prints.
-Leave in the insert songs for the dub or better yet have them dubbed (Vic Mignogna singing "Spirit vs. Spirit" anyone?).
-Rewrite the scripts for seasons 3-9 so they won't sound stupid.

I would do it like this:
-Buy the rights to the Dragonbox-footage.
-Don't mess with the Dragonbox-footage in any way. (Meaning both the credits, episode-titles and previews would be intact, with the original kanji)
-Do a complete redub using the same voice-actors, (if only for consistency. I personally think the dub's voices are awful) done with an accurate script like what they did in One Piece. Also make sure to keep ALL the japanese music intact.
-This shouldn't even be necessary to mention, but Steve Simmons' excellent subtitles would of course be included
-Package the set in a thinpak-format with original artwork straight from Toei for the box, and the japanese DVD-covers for the thinpaks themselves. (Obviously, I'd have each disc contain the exact same episodes as the corresponding R2-single, in order to keep the coverart apropriate for each disc.)

That would, in my opinion, be a perfect Dragonball-release. And aside from the complete redubbing, (which I personally wouldn't care about, I just felt that it should be included) it shouldn't even be all that hard to do! I know Italy got the Dragonbox-footage, so FUNi can obviously get it if they want to. And the other points were essentially just "release it as it is".

I wouldn't say it neeRAB a complete redub but definetely season 3. It is horrible. From there onward is fairly accurate. It may not have all the exact lines but the dub does stay true to the story at least.

Agreed.

I wonder how long it'll take funimation to re-re realease dragonball z again, I mean, they are almost done with these remastered sets, so I don't expect them to suddenly just create new DBZ DVD's, but I would asume around 1 year.

What is up with them using the same pose of the person on the cover flying to do a punch attack? Was this supposed to be on purpose or was it just out of laziness to design any different poses?

Hmm... let's see...Dragon Box footage, as many have said. Personally, I refuse to buy ANY Dragon Ball until we get that. I CAN WAIT!Dubbed versions of the original openings and endings. Maybe I mean, make it an option on the menus or something - four audio tracks; English with Dub Music + American OP/ERAB, English with Japanese Music + Dubbed OP/ERAB, English with Japanese Music + Dubbed OP/ERAB, Japanese with Japanese Music + OP/ERAB.Better cover artwork, and design scheme in general. For example... S1: Goku; S2: Vegeta (Namek Style), S3: Freeza, S4: Trunks, S5: Perfect Cell, S6: SSJ2 Gohan, S7: ...Saiyaman? S8: Fat Buu, S9: Vegetto.A redubbed correction of some parts, for sure. Dr. Gero? Turns out he's not the leader of the Red Ribbon Army. Might wanna pounce on that, FUNi....that's all I got.
