If You Could Change One Thing?

Aladdin the Series: I'd make sure Aladdin's character was consistent. Seriously, he could be written perfectly one episode and then horrible and OOC the next. It was really aggrivating.

Ben 10: For the original series, tone down the Ben-Gwen feud as the show went on rather than sticking to the annoying status quo, which lessened both characters' likability. For Alien Force, I'd make it more consistent with the original series rather than retconning the heck out of everything. Oh, and I wouldn't kill of Grandpa Max so early.

Code Lyoko: Two words: Less. Filler.

Hey Arnold: I would make sure Arnold stays an interesting character rather than become a boring plot device. Oh, and I'd stop having every other episode be about Helga and her obsession with Arnold.

Kim Possible: I would tone down the "Kim can do anything" notion. I'm well aware that Kim needs to be a strong female heroine, but the show tends to go overkill with it, at some points decreasing her likeability.

Pokemon: This one's easy; I'd continue the show in the style it was going during the Kanto/Orange Island arcs, rather than the formulamatic style that it turned into from Johto and onward. And I'd get rid of Ash, Brock, Team Rocket, etc. once they've reached their peak, rather then drag them into the dirt of weak characterization like what's actually happened with them.

Teen Titans: I second the notion that I needed a better finale. I didn't hate Things Change myself, but it just didn't seem fit to be the last episode, especially since it was all about Beast Boy and not the whole team.

W.I.T.C.H: I'd have the first season stick closer to the comics in term of plot and characterization, particularly for characters like Cornelia and Cedric. As for the second season, I'd just have Nerissa, the show's best villain, be the final opponent, not Phobos and/or Cedric.

Danny Phantom: Dear Hartman, please stop adding unnecessary humor in what is otherwise dramatic moments. Please.

Xiaolin Showdown: Give Jack Spicer his dignity back.

Jackie Chan Adventures: Work some character development. Jade's annoyance level shot up during Season Three.

Doug: So, did he ever kiss Patti?

Snipped the last two because I don't follow those shows.

1. I second the motion on Zan. I should point out that he wasn't so much the bragging bumbler in the comics as he was on TV. Character development was not as important back then as it is now. Otherwise, there could've been plans formulated to spin the Twins off into their own series (which would not have justified them being written out of Legendary Super Powers Show after 3 episodes, but hey...), which would allow for the writers to bring them more into line with the comics.

2. I agree with the point on Static Shock as well. WB fumbled big time in this regard.

3. Fire (formerly Green Fury) & Ice(maiden) were members of the Global Guardians at that time, 2 years before joining the Justice League in the comics. Remember, they already had a Latin hero (El Dorado), who wasn't being used all that much. As I noted elsewhere, Starfire would've needed to be redesigned for television in order to be used. Wonder Girl would've/should've been in line for at least one guest appearance. I agree that Canary & Vixen should've been given consideration, but marketing apparently believed the target audience was made up mostly of boys only. Such narrow thinking hurt a lot of shows.

4. How many storylines on Family Guy have revolved around Meg? It's like she doesn't get enough respect. I don't watch FG all that much, but from what I gather, Peter is a moron, Stewie, we all know, has delusions of grandeur, Chris is somewhere near dear ol' dad in terms of IQ (which isn't saying much). Brian, amazingly, seems like the most intelligent of the bunch (which again isn't saying much).

What I'd change, in no particular order:

1. Capt. Planet: Character development improvement, if ya please! Like, Wheeler was hitting on Linka every chance he got. It would've been nice to do one story where she actually goes out on a date with him, and then, duty calls.....! Have to agree that CP himself could've stood to have had some anger to channel once in a while.....

2. All-New Super Friends Hour: Looking back, H-B cut themselves short. Some team eps could've used a "special super guest" (i.e. Zatanna, Red Tornado) that wasn't being used otherwise. Rima was used, but her comic book had ended some 3-4 years earlier. I'm surprised DC still had a license to use her, or passed it on to H-B. Of the guest heroes from that season, only Atom (and, of course, Rima) wasn't brought back for Challenge the following season. In later years, they could've stood to add some subplots before the '84-5 season, when Darkseid became the central villain, surprisingly obsessed with Wonder Woman. For example, as I had hinted elsewhere, they could've gradually set up a plotline in which Robin, in taking more of a big brother role with the Twins, began falling for Jayna (and vice versa). But back then, character development was a low priority.

3. Real Ghostbusters: I'd have spun Slimer off into a separate series, pulling the "spud" off the main show. Slimer would air in an earlier time slot, with TRG on the other side of the lineup (before 12, of course). That way, everyone's happy.

4. Archie cartoons (1968-78): Sabrina could've been used as a 3rd option for Archie if he had issues with Betty and/or Veronica. She rarely interacted with Archie, Reggie, et al, in the comics.

5. Birdman: An origin story, if you please.

6. Harvey Birdman: I'd have ended the series with this:

Harvey's in his office. A 2nd man in a Birdman suit arrives. This would be Ray Randall (see above), the "real" Birdman, decrying Harvey as an imposter using his name & image for personal gain. The Avenger used on the show would also be revealed to be part of the scam, as the "original" would've passed on by the time the series premiered. If it leads to Harvey being killed off at the end of the finale, then you have a more rational reason for doing so.

7. Shazzan: If CBS couldn't renew the series, H-B could've pitched it to NBC, setting up a crossover with the Arabian Knights (Banana Splits), which would've brought closure to both series.

Feedback to the above, please.

Chowder: Almost perfect, really. Just tone down the fart jokes a tad. I don't mind fart jokes now and then, but not every other episode needs one.

Recess: Make the cast less stereotypical (i.e., no fat dumb kid, no smart girl with braces and glasses, no token black with nappy hair, no curmudgeonly old teachers, no kid who's just like Arnold from The Magic School Bus, etc.). Also get rid of crap that just doesn't make sense. I swear, the first ep I saw had some kid saying his "Uncle Mary" fell off a jungle gym and broke a bone in her body, resulting in a plate being put in a totally different part of her body. It was plain stupid.

The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack: Increase the humor level. This show could really use a dose of sheer goofiness. Also, try to inject a little more personality into Flapjack somehow, maybe by letting him stray out on his own a little more.

Camp Lazlo: Get sharp writers who actually know how to make a show funny. Also add an otter to the cast (one that actually acts like an otter, not like the slow witted blob Brandy & Mr. Whiskers had), because otters are full of win.

Phineas and Ferb: Make the whole show about Perry, because platypi are almost as full of win as otters are. (Just kidding.)

Invader Zim: Throw Jhonen off the top of Mt. Everest. No, seriously, just tell him he can't do a bleeping animated series and make him stick to his creepy goth comics, because at least those will never be let into the mainstream.

Hate me all you want, but I say, a less troublesome, kinder gentler Bianca Dupree.
And Kevin Thomson from Daria finally graduating, with help from Daria and Jane, and finally getting even with Brittany, Barch and Li in Is It Collage Yet?
