...contribute to...? If you connect a phone to the ADSL socket on an ADSL/Phone splitter, could it possibly contribute to ADSL connection drop outs?

I have just noticed someone in my house has setup a new phone incorrectly, but they connected the line for this phone to the wrong socket on the filter, probably as the local phone socket was already taken by an EFTPOS machine. I saw this after I was on a call to Telstra Bigpond, regarding connection drop outs which have aparently been happening since the day this phone was setup. I called back Bigpond asking this same question, and the 1st level helpdesk person had no idea, and when I was transferred to another person they said it wouldn't affect the router connection.

I did a google search regarding drop outs and the filters and the common recommendation in determining the problem was to disconnect all devices connected to the phone lines to ensure that they are not causing the problem. So this could mean that the phone connected incorrectly could have been contributing to the drop outs or causing them?
