If you close your eyes, how do you know if your surroundings are still there?

This is a question that always gets me baffled, but how do you know that everything is still there when you fully close your eyes, how do you know its just not complete darkness or you are in a place that resembles nothing of your surroundings, this would mean that you could still hear what you think is there, (i.e chatting to a friend on a bus) you would feel vibrations and imagine you are where you are, but how do you know it actually exists if you can't see it.
light formations coming through your sockets doesn't count, because then you are seeing something and your eyes are not fully closed.
